This past month we finally set up our two year olds big boy room! He has slept with us since day one so this was a huge step. I really wanted a gallery wall above his dresser but didn’t want to spend a lot. The only purchase I made was for the letter board at hobby lobby (using my 40% off coupon of course!) and some washi tape. Everything else I had on hand but would be super affordable anyways if you don’t.
The first thing I used was this “you are our greatest adventure” wood sign. This was actually from his first birthday but I thought it’d be great decor for his room! My sister in law helped me make a few signs like this out of a couple pieces of wood I found in our garage and a chalk pen. She has awesome handwriting and I do not. However this sign is one that was actually my handwriting so dont worry if you dont have great calligraphy skills! You can still pull this off by switching to cursive in one row of wording to dress it up a little. Or enlist someone with good handwriting to help! I didn’t stain my piece of wood because it already had a good color to it but you may want to stain yours.
If you don’t want to spend a lot on stain what you can do is get a brown acrylic paint that you like (they usually have them at craft stores for around a dollar) and add a little bit of the paint to about a cup of water and just rub it on with a washcloth . Then just let it dry and get to writing! You could also of course use stain that you already have around the house or leave the wood the way it is. You can find pieces of wood at craft and home improvement stores. Look for a a very thin piece to keep the cost down and make it easier to hang on the wall.
Next up is the framed buffalo check fabric. Super super easy and probably took less than 5 minutes. All you need is some printed fabric you like. I happened to have this saved from his first birthday party but you could use any fabric. A small piece of fabric will not run you much at the craft store. If you really wanted to keep costs down I would suggest looking through your child’s old onesies and blankets and find something with a print that you really like and that maybe even has some sentimental value(that you dont mind cutting up of course!) It’s literally as easy as popping the fabric into a frame. I had this frame laying around but a dollar store one would work just fine!
Next I scoured some old kids books for a print I liked. Savers sells 4 kids books for $1 or you can just look through books you already have. I suggest looking for pages with a white background or something that isn’t to busy. This book happened to be a poem book and even the pages with no pictures and just the poems would have been really cute! Just tape on the wall with some washi tape you like and bam your done!
The canvas painting was done by my son. He really loves to paint so I wanted to incorporate some of his own artwork. I just bought a canvas that would fit well and gave him paint colors that would coordinate with his room and let him do his work.
I hope this inspires you to look around your house for things you already have to decorate! What are some diys you’ve done in your kids room? I’m always looking for ideas! Tell me in the comments below
